How about The William Nicholas Liberi Memorial Prize - Awarded annually to the member of the Wells College Community who has demonstrated a commitment to queer issues, especially through hir services as an ally to the queer community.
Thoughts?

It should definitely say 'transgendered' and 'queer' in the description. I think Vic Munoz pointed out in another forum how freaking awesome it would be to hear those words at convocation... and how much Will would love it.
As always, if E & I can do anything, let us know!!
Does this look better:
Awarded annually to the member of the Wells College Community who has demonstrated a commitment to transgender and queer issues, especially through hir services as an ally to the tlgbq community.
I love this second one for three reasons that truly make me want to hug you all real big. 1) the inclusion of transgender; 2) putting the "t" first because why is it that we have to follow last all the time?; and 3) including the word ally to show that coalition is important and that building bridges like Alice Lo wrote was what Will did real well.
Just a question; should we say "Awarded annually to the Wells student who..." using "member" opens it up to staff and faculty. Is that okay? I'm leaning toward student myself, but open to changing my mind.
Abrazos,
Vic
I like the idea of leaving it open... that way it promotes faculty and staff serving as allies of the students and each other too... and lets be honest, the students definitely need faculty and staff allies... I know that made a big difference for me at wells, and I know that it did for Will too... if we do have it open to the whole community though, do you know if that affects who we can choose to award the prize?
Hmmm, the process of who awards the prize is a whole other thread... each prize that is currently awarded at Honors Convocation has its own process. The Dorothy Alison Razor's Edge Prize in Women's Studies is awarded by the Women's Studies faculty. The psychology prize by the psychology faculty. I would think that the donors/organizers to/of this prize would set up the manner in which the prize will be decided.
Could you set up a post where we could make suggestions on the process of how to choose who will get the award each year? Then we could all comment. For example, tlgbq alums, students, faculty, staff could gather nominations and decide? You could self-nominate or someone could nomiate you. Does it make sense to have the chair of WS get this group together annually? There'll need to be someone who gets the nomination and decision making process together every year.
Abrazos,
Vic
I love the description. I would love to hear those words spoken at convocation. Year after year. It'd be beautiful.
Here are my thoughts on who to award it to:
It'd be great for faculty & staff to have more incentives to act as allies to the queer community. It feels a little weird, though, to award a monetary prize to a faculty/staff member, especially when college is such a financial burden to students and not so much a debt-inducing endeavour for their employees (or, at least, it shouldn't be). MAYBE it could be a two-tiered award & go to two people each year: one (mostly symbolic) award to a faculty or staff person who has been an exceptional ally and one monetary prize to a student? Maybe?
I like Jen's idea of having two awards, a monetary one for students and a more symbolic one (a gold star for awesome!) for faculty and staff. While its important that students be recognized for this kind of work, the importance of having ally staff and faculty members cannot be undervalued, and equally deserves recognition. That would make the wording of the award a little more complicated though, and I'm not really sure how to solve that.
